We can't put everything on here because it's all in the book. Publishers are picky about giving away the store... it sucks..:

OK, so many people fear poker it's not funny. Even people who play poker fear playing for "money", "real money", "high stakes", etc. Why is this? ('Cause you'll lose... right?) Actually, I don't think so. The reality is people pay good money to play games that they are guaranteed to lose. Golf is a great example. Can you shoot 18? No, the goal is 72. Who shoots 72? Very very few. What if you shoot 72, do you win? No, you could have shot 71. How much did you spend? Allot, even a municipal course costs $25-40 to play, plus hundreds for clubs, $40 for shoes, a dozen for cheap balls, get a glove, a bag, want a cart with that?, instruction, magazines, a hat, whatever. Add all that up and what do you have? People paying big money every day for a guaranteed loss. They aren't scared of that. You can think of 6 more examples no problem, I'm sure.
So why are people afraid to play poker? Now you might be thinking "I'm not! So why waste my time with this crap?" Because it will come into play as you increase stakes, start playing for real ('real' meaning actual for some and significant for others) money and generally step your game up a notch or two, OK?
The reason people fear poker is because they fear they will get taken advantage of. The fear being inadequate. Someone is going to cheat them, "see through them" or somehow dupe them out of their money. They feel bad when they lose - more so than most other activities. So they avoid losing and live in fear - whether it's to bump up in stakes or play for money at all.
This fear is caused by a lack of preparation coupled by a lack of faith, coated in a layer of inconsistency. _Knowing is half the battle. Want to lose your fear - be prepared. Know how to play, have a plan, reasonable expectations and an understanding of all that poker involves. Now, once you've done that, have faith. Guess what? Poker is consistent. From the day no limit holdem was invented until_ this very day, all the cards have fallen exactly the same ways in the same frequencies, over and over and over again. Not once has 5 of a kind popped up. An ace high flush has never been beat by a king high flush. Drawing odds have always been the same, as are the odds that your hand will hold up. So poker has been the same all that time. -No, because the blind structures have changed in NLHE and poker in general has changed. Consider revising. You can have faith that it will work the way it's supposed to over the long-term. Short term, not even god knows what the next card will be.
So, is poker risky? It's deadly if you don't have a game, and it's frustrating if you don't have faith that short-term variance will be dominated by long-term skill. The main influence you have against variance is Consistency. You can't fight variance with erratic, varying play. That's fighting fire with fire, and while people say "you have to fight fire with fire" all the time, in reality if you try that, you just Burn More Shit Down! -doesn't sound very good get burned! So, be smarter than that and fight fire with water. It works every time. (If my brother in law is reading this book, Fire is Variance, and Water is Consistency. So you're fighting variance with consistency... got it Steve?)
So, Preparation plus Faith plus Consistency absolutely destroys fear. Poker isn't any more risky than anything else. If you don't know how to drive, you don't have faith that your car with stop when you hit the brakes and you drive erratically, then driving is 1000% more risky than poker. Not to mention that even if you're the best driver you can still lose your life in a car, you can only lose money in poker!! So, there you go.
