The following is a Q/A with Will C., a Performance Poker graduate who uses Poker Tracker. Although there are plenty of discussions about Poker Tracker, I wanted to get his responses to some common questions about the application with regards to the Performance Poker Challenge.

What is poker tracker?
A poker database of hand histories, which is used to gather information on your opponents and yourself.
Why use it?
By gathering data on your opponents, you can notice their betting patterns and playing styles. This information can be used, in the long run to make you money.
You can also analyze your game for leaks, view your winrate, and review any or every hand you've ever played.
Can you use it with 19 hand?
As long as you are playing at a poker room that is PokerTracker-friendly, you can use it. Since you should only be playing 19 out of 169 possible starting hands, you can see how closely you are only playing 11% of the hands.
What statistics do you think are most valuable?
The most valuable stats are:
# of hands: Make sure you have at least 50-100 or even more hands recorded on a player before you can trust the statistics.
Voluntarily Put Money In Pot (VP$IP): This measures tightness/looseness of a player.
Pre Flop Raise (PFR): How often player raises preflop. (Preflop Aggression) Aggression Factor: Number of times player bets/raises divided by checks/calls. (Postflop Aggression) Went to Showdown When Saw Flop: Measures often players goes to showdown. Higher % = more of a calling station.
In what instances do you trust poker tracker to make a move or a call?
If a player is playing like a maniac, (vp$ip of 50 or more), I will reraise preflop with a wider range, since I am likely to have the best hand.
What have you learned about 19 hand and performance poker by using poker tracker?
19 hands corresponds to a VP$IP of 11%. If your vp$ip is much higher than that, you aren't being disciplined enough.
How does pt work on pacific?
You need to download a separate program called HandGrabber, in order to import the hand histories into Poker Tracker. HandGrabber costs a little money, but you can try it for free.
Where else do you use it? Does 19 hand work there too?
I mostly play on Poker Stars now. 19 hands isn't as profitable there because the play is a little more aggressive overall, but it still can be done.
As a performance poker graduate what would you say to incoming members?
Don't hide your mistakes, learn from them.
