3 Ways People Get Paid for Pre-Flop Calls © 2006,2007

We can't put everything on here because it's all in the book. Publishers are picky about giving away the store... it sucks..:

Some players get rich by exploiting Tight/Aggressive players. You might be one of them, or you might be the TAG player who gets exploited from time to time. Whether you want to try playing this style or you are on the receiving end, here are the 4 ways players who raise (or calling a raise) preflop with poor or drawing cards get paid off:
  1. Their continued aggression wins the pot uncontested (if they raised preflop).
  2. (If they called a raise preflop) They feel they can read the preflop raiser and take the pot away from him post flop (or get out if they see that he's strong). So, they steal pots from the original raiser.
  3. Their funky hand hits and the preflop raiser (or others) pays them off because the funky player is in so many hands that he’s surely bluffing.

THIS TIME the aggressive player raised preflop with quality cards and weren't given credit for having a quality hand, so they get callers throughout the hand.

So, what does this mean to you? Since the 19 hand example Performance Poker in this book is very tight, you want to know that you may be taken advantage of in this way. That's fine. Continue playing your game. It won't make a difference in the end, unless you continually play against this type of player and never adjust (which is unlikely if you read the entire book). Typically on tables with 40%+ preflop callers and 20xBB average pots this type of player doesn’t last long, because on these tables the best cards typically win in the end. Second, you may want to try this tactic as you explore your own Performance Poker at tables with tighter statistics. I'm not advocating for it or against it. I'll exploit players who I can read - you should too. But don't get overly reliant on it, keep good records of when, where and how it both works and doesn't work. And incorporate it into a balanced game strategy that you can execute consistently without tilting out on. The biggest risk to playing this style of play is when you get behind (money-wise) and start to get a tilty mindset. You feel you need to "catch up", so you start getting more speculative and more aggressive. This typically just throws gas on a spark and makes for a very bad night. The best time to use this strategy is when you are already UP, and you have the table slightly intimidated. IF you throw a little play variation on them then they will freeze like a squirrel in headlamps and you will turn your slight intimidation into a full frontal assault.
